Tutorial: Containing an anomaly

How to Contain

Containing anomalies in Uncontained: An SCP Card Game is one of the few things you can legally do during your turn that doesn't depend on anything else in the game. Meaning, you can Contain an anomaly on your site at least once per turn as long as you have the resources and capacity to do so (since it requires civilians and some anomalies may restrict you to Contain them at all).

To Contain an anomaly, you need to Sacrifice the required number of civilians to Contain it. Note that this requirement is just for the "number of civilians", not the "number of civilian cards".

Sacrifice just means you Discard that number of civilians from your site.

Safe anomalies require only one civilian to be Contained.

Euclid anomalies require two civilians. This means you can Sacrifice either a woman and a man, a man and a child or just one couple civilian card (since it's equivalent to two civilians).

Keter anomalies require three civilians to be Contained. Like above, you can Sacrifice either three women, two men and a child, one couple and a woman or just one family card (since it's equivalent to four civilians).

Once you Contained an anomaly, you move it from your Uncontained zone to your Contained zone.

Two types of Containing

There's essentially two types of the "Contain" mechanic.

First, during normal turn circumstances, Containing anomalies requires an "action". At least once during your turn, you get a free action, and you get this free action during the Action phase (hence the name). Basically, if you don't want to Draw more civilians from the Public pile or Play a character from your hand, you may Contain an anomaly on your site as your action by Sacrificing civilians.

Breach

Secondly, there's a special type of anomaly that doesn't cost an action when Contained. These anomalies are colloquially called "breach" anomalies, and they have the  icon on their card effect area. Once you Draw a  anomaly, you may ignore it so it gets Discarded or you may Contain it.

Fun facts

There are indeed anomalies that's almost impossible to Contain, like SCP-701 ("The Hanged King's Tragedy").

However, Containing the Hanged King is not completely impossible because of the Suspend mechanic. Since "Suspend" makes the text area of a card blank, its effect that restricts you to Contain it is nullified. Scientists are one of the few cards that can do this, so we consider the Containment of the Hanged King a major achievement in the game.

It's mentioned above that Safe anomalies require one civilian to be Contained, right? This isn't always the case because of the Ethics Committee Officer. If you have that character on your site, you can Contain Safe anomalies for free, Euclids only for one and Keters only for two, etc.

Another "next to impossible to Contain" anomaly in the game is none other than the holy Peanut SCP-173 ("The Sculpture") due to its unique effect. Unlike the Hanged King that straightfowardly describes itself to be Uncontainable, the Sculpture takes advantage of the "phases" of every player.

Since you can only Contain anomalies during your Action phase (because that's the only moment in your turn that you can a free action), you won't have time to Contain SCP-173 since it immediately moves to another site during your Start phase. Peanut is just annoying to Contain, but it's not that hard to deal with. You can just Neutralize it, or also use a Scientist to Suspend it and prevent it from moving.

However, there's also an anomaly that can Contain it like it's Christmas, and it's God (SCP-343).

So yes, in this card game, the only God can contain Peanut. How hilarious is that?!

So, if Ethics Committee Officer is on the field, and the card with "While uncontained, civilians with skull icons count as 2 sacrifices for containment" (He is in fact uncontained) can you Contain Euclids for free as well? or say, with a family could you Contain Keeters for free as well?
